Shea Butter Soap Base Recipe
Here is a basic recipe for making a soap base:
Ingredients:
- 16 oz. Shea Butter
- 14 oz. Coconut Oil
- 12 oz. Olive Oil
- 8 oz. Water
- 4 oz. Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
Instructions:
- Measure out the water and lye in separate containers. Slowly pour the lye into the water, stirring until the lye is fully dissolved. Set aside to cool.
- In a separate container, measure out the shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. Heat the oils together until they are fully melted.
- Once both the lye solution and the oil mixture have cooled to around 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit, slowly pour the lye solution into the oil mixture while stirring.
- Use a stick blender to mix the ingredients together until they reach “trace,” meaning that the mixture thickens and leaves a trace on the surface when dripped from the blender.
- Pour the mixture into a mold and let it sit for 24-48 hours to harden. Once hardened, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars.
- Allow the bars to cure for 4-6 weeks before using.
Note: Always wear gloves, goggles and long-sleeved clothing when working with lye, and make sure to work in a well-ventilated area.
